History of GMC

History of GMC

In 1908, a division of the American company “General Motors” for the production of trucks was founded, which was called “GMC”. The key client of the brand was the government of the United States of America, which purchased the entire GMC lineup for the needs of the army.

In 1925, the first civilian truck was introduced, which had a load capacity of up to 750 kilograms, with a two-axle chassis design and rear wheel drive. And two years later, a whole range of trucks of various carrying capacities and directions, which is called the GMC T, enters the market.

In 1934, in the wake of the brand’s success, the world’s first truck with a cab above the engine was introduced, which, as it developed, assumed more and more streamlined forms, which contributed to lower drag and lower fuel consumption. And in 1935, by order of the management of General Motors, GMC engineers begin to work on the creation of the first diesel power unit, since it was diesel engines that were considered the most suitable for trucks in those years.

In 1939, the entire General Motors concern switched to the production of military equipment for the US Army, producing armored vehicles, tanks, and heavy trucks. It was thanks to the creativity of GMC engineers that a prototype of an all-wheel drive truck of the American brand, which went into production in 1956, was field tested.

However, by 1987, the production of GMC trucks was discontinued. In 1991, the company’s first full-size SUV was introduced, dubbed the Yukon. It was in those years that the formation of a segment of huge luxury off-road cars began, which became especially popular in the United States and Canada.

Since then, more than 7 models of the company have been introduced, which consistently ranked among the top five most popular SUVs in the United States market until 2001, when another division of GM, Cadillac, took up the production of luxury SUVs. It is worth noting that it was the GMC Tahoe model that formed the basis of such models as the Cadillac Escalade and the Hummer H2.

However, a change in the direction of the parent company led to the fact that GMC was retrained as a manufacturer of commercial vehicles, among which GMC pickups were especially popular, second only to the Ford F150 in sales.

In 2007, the GMC Acadia model appeared. This car acquired not only a pleasant modern appearance, but also an equipped, comfortable interior and an economical 3.6-liter power unit.

In 2009, the Acadia was named the safest pet carrier at the Chicago Auto Show. In the same year, a five-seater Terrain crossover built on the Chevrolet Equinox platform was presented at the New York Auto Show. The car has a comfortable, richly equipped interior and a number of technical advantages.
